Hyperliquid through FOMO: builder fees, funding and total cost

Trading on the same order book does not mean paying the same through every app. FOMO adds its app charge to Hyperliquid’s fee, while holding a contract adds funding. A useful comparison follows the notional of each fill rather than just deposited margin.

What to check first

Trading on the same order book does not mean paying the same through every app. FOMO adds its app charge to Hyperliquid’s fee, while holding a contract adds funding. A useful comparison follows the notional of each fill rather than just deposited margin.

1. What Hyperliquid charges and what FOMO adds

Separate the execution venue from the application submitting the order.

Hyperliquid’s initial base rate for ordinary perpetuals is 0.015% maker and 0.045% taker before discounts or market-specific terms. FOMO’s help centre publishes an additional charge of up to 0.05% of position size per trade. These are not two names for one charge: one belongs to the venue and the other to the access application.

The actual rate is displayed before submission. On FOMO mobile, inspect the details row alongside estimated fill price, slippage and margin; on the website it appears below the order button. Review it even after previous use, because tier, market and instruction can change. Our Hyperliquid review covers products; this article isolates interface charges rather than selecting a contract.

2. Builder fees, approved maximums and referrals differ

An approval sets a ceiling; it does not prove every order always charges that maximum.

Builder codes let an application receive a fee on fills it submits. The user approves a maximum for a builder address, while each order specifies its charge within that permission. The protocol’s perpetual builder ceiling is 0.1%; it differs from FOMO’s published up-to-0.05% charge. A 0.1% approval is not an automatic bill at that rate.

The permission can be revoked through the account’s applicable tools. Disconnecting a wallet from a page does not establish revocation of an on-chain approval. Reading a fee or public record requires no new signature. Do not approve a supposed savings calculator. An API or agent key does not replace the main wallet signature required to approve the maximum.

A referral identifies an invitation relationship; a builder identifies an application’s order-level charge. Do not assume one removes the other or that every discount applies to both. Keep the actual quote and breakdown. Perpetual rules do not automatically extend to spot: builder codes apply to particular sides and charging assets.

3. Example: opening and closing at equal notional

To isolate fees, assume a hypothetical USDC 1,000 notional on both fills.

Taker example without discounts
ItemCalculation
Hyperliquid1,000 × 0.045% = 0.45 per fill.
FOMOIf 0.05% applies: 1,000 × 0.05% = 0.50.
One fill0.45 + 0.50 = USDC 0.95.
Round trip0.95 + 0.95 = USDC 1.90, before funding.

The example uses FOMO’s published maximum and the initial taker rate of an ordinary perpetual, not a guaranteed quote for every account. With hypothetical margin of USDC 100, the USDC 1.90 would equal 1.9% of margin. That is neither 1.9% of notional nor a return calculation incorporating price movement: execution charges are being isolated.

Recalculate the exit charge if its notional changes. An exit worth 1,200 at the same combined 0.095% would cost USDC 1.14, giving USDC 2.09 alongside the 0.95 entry. Do not always double the initial charge. Partial fills can also have different prices and maker/taker classifications; use actual fill amounts when reconciling.

4. Add funding, spread and slippage

Holding costs do not end when the opening fee is paid.

Funding is a periodic payment associated with an open position, separate from execution fees. Hyperliquid settles hourly, and the sign can mean payment or receipt. Use actual account settlements rather than multiplying one observed hourly rate as though it never changes. The funding guide explains notional, rate and settlement timing.

If the earlier example incurred two hypothetical USDC 0.10 payments, known charges would be 1.90 + 0.20 = USDC 2.10. A received payment would instead reduce the total. Spread and slippage affect execution prices and are not necessarily separate fee entries. Counting them both inside trading PnL and again as a cash charge distorts the result.

5. Why FOMO PnL can exceed the balance change

Read the specific history’s convention before reconstructing results.

FOMO states that closed-position PnL includes funding but excludes trading fees. Summing those positions can therefore exceed the change in perps cash. That convention belongs to FOMO and must not be applied automatically to every Hyperliquid chart, export or PnL field. Protocol documentation also distinguishes display components from margin accounting.

Choose a period and retain opening and closing balances, transfers, fills, app and venue charges, and funding. Separate transfers from profit. If a field already includes an item, do not deduct it again. A discrepancy alone does not establish a hidden fee: transfers or open positions may sit outside the view being totalled.

6. Compare interfaces without changing the strategy

Keep market, size, order type and holding period consistent for a useful comparison.

Compare a builder-routed order with an equivalent order without that charge, rather than comparing a FOMO taker with a maker that may never fill. Check account and tier too: FOMO says volume belongs to its trading wallet, not a separate account. HIP-3 markets can add their own terms. The base percentage does not necessarily describe every contract displayed by an app.

For the direct workflow, using Hyperliquid covers deposits, orders and withdrawals. Its existing platform access lets you inspect terms for a new trade; changing interfaces does not refund earlier charges. Total cost helps compare execution and transfers without confusing them with strategy returns.

Final checklist

Review these points before taking the next step.

  • Market and account identified.
  • Tier and maker/taker classification checked.
  • App fee separated from approved maximum.
  • Each fill’s notional calculated.
  • Funding and transfers separated.
  • PnL convention reviewed.

Common mistakes

Small checks for a more considered decision.

Calculating on margin

Execution rates use notional, not only posted collateral.

Treating a ceiling as a fixed rate

Builder approval limits the charge; inspect the actual order.

Duplicating funding

If the selected PnL includes it, do not deduct it again.

FAQs

Does FOMO charge on top of Hyperliquid?

Its help centre publishes up to 0.05% per perpetual trade in addition to the venue charge. The applicable percentage is displayed before submission.

Is there a closing fee too?

Yes. FOMO describes deductions when executing both entry and exit. Recalculate exit notional if it changed.

Does a referral remove the builder fee?

Do not assume so. They are separate mechanisms; check charges and discounts on the particular order.

Does zero builder fee mean free trading?

No. Venue fees, funding, spread, slippage and fund-transfer costs may remain.
