Our Polymarket review: who might find it useful?

Polymarket stands out by combining event markets whose prices reflect expectations with a separate perpetual-futures product linked to financial assets. Its range of event topics and market-implied probabilities set it apart from exchanges focused on buying cryptocurrencies.

Perps broaden the appeal for traders who understand leverage, funding and liquidation, but they do not make the service suitable for everyone. Published transaction fees must be considered alongside spreads, liquidity and holding costs. The range of available products and features can also vary by country.

Someone mainly seeking to buy and hold BTC or ETH with euros may prefer a standard spot exchange. Prediction-market participants and derivatives traders face different decisions. This assessment is based on public documentation, not a claim of personal trading experience.

Polymarket pros and cons

Pros

Its strengths include the breadth of event markets, market-implied probabilities and a new derivatives product linked to crypto, indices and other assets. Published fee schedules also help users understand how pricing differs between product types.

Cons

Limitations include the distinction between prediction shares and futures contracts, liquidation risk on leveraged positions, uneven liquidity among markets and geographic restrictions. Product access and features can also vary by country.

Polymarket now combines prediction markets and derivatives

Polymarket became known for trading outcomes of future events, such as elections, economic decisions or sports results. Each outcome share has a market price that is often interpreted as an implied probability. A winning share can settle at one unit while a losing share can settle at zero. Until an event resolves, prices change and positions may be sold to other participants. This is not equivalent to buying bitcoin or an equity share.

Since September 2026 the brand has also offered Perps: perpetual futures tied to financial asset prices. A perpetual position can be long if a trader expects a rise or short if a fall is expected, using margin and without a fixed expiry. It does not necessarily deliver the underlying asset. Prediction shares, perpetual derivatives and conventional spot trading should therefore be treated as different products when comparing fees and risk.

What instruments does Polymarket Perps offer?

Polymarket announced Perps on 3 September 2026. Its product pages describe cryptocurrencies such as BTC and ETH, individual stocks, equity indices and commodities including gold, silver and oil. This is a material new direction: alongside positions on event outcomes, the platform now offers exposure to financial price movements. Instrument lists change, and a listing is not proof that the same product is available to a resident of every jurisdiction.

Perpetual contracts do not expire on a fixed date. Positions may remain open while sufficient margin is maintained, applicable funding is settled and the position has not been closed or liquidated. Maximum leverage varies by instrument, position size and current product settings. Launch material referred to up to 20x while later product marketing has described other ceilings. No single advertised leverage multiplier should be assumed for every account.

Polymarket Perps trading fees: maker, taker and funding

Official Perps documentation publishes a starting maker rate of 0.0125% and a taker rate of 0.0400% of executed notional, denominated in pUSD. Maker refers to orders adding liquidity and taker to orders removing it. For a hypothetical 1,000 units of notional, those percentages amount to 0.125 or 0.40 units. This is arithmetic from a published fee schedule, not an observed trade, and excludes price spreads and possible slippage.

The schedule declines across trailing 30-day volume tiers, and some beta accounts may temporarily retain special pricing. Funding is an additional factor: it reflects the difference between a perpetual contract and its reference index, is averaged over hourly windows and settles between long and short positions. Depending on its direction and how long a position remains open, it may cost money or produce a credit. Liquidation can create further charges. Funding settles at the end of each one-hour window; the eight-hour reference formula does not mean charges occur only every eight hours. Orders through an enabled builder may carry an additional trader-approved fee of up to 10 basis points (0.10%), separate from the exchange fee. That charge is not assumed for the MapMyExchange affiliate link.

Deposits and withdrawals: assets, networks and costs

Polymarket's help center explains how to deposit by selecting an asset and network, copying the account-specific address and transferring funds. Addresses can differ between blockchains and minimum amounts may apply. Transfers to the wrong chain or address can be difficult or impossible to recover.

Withdrawals start from Portfolio by selecting token, amount, network and recipient address. The provider also documents its move to Polygon-based pUSD collateral backed by USDC for the international product. Conversion, network and intermediary fees should be checked for the selected route rather than treated as a fixed SEPA withdrawal charge.

Polymarket custody and security: what is documented

Polymarket describes prediction-market wallets as non-custodial, with private keys that users control or can export. Key and account security therefore matter. Non-custodial infrastructure does not remove smart-contract risk, operational risk or the possibility of irreversible transfer errors.

The wallet model described for predictions must not be assumed to apply unchanged to funds posted as futures margin. Perps have their own collateral, margin and liquidation rules. Before depositing, readers should check the specific product, collateral asset, contracting entity and applicable terms.

Leverage, initial margin and liquidation

Leverage multiplies exposure relative to the collateral posted, magnifying both gains and losses. Polymarket distinguishes initial margin required to enter a position from maintenance margin required to keep it open. If account equity drops below maintenance margin, liquidation may begin. Leverage limits also depend on position size: increasing notional can require additional collateral and a lower permitted multiplier.

The documentation describes liquidations through orders that reduce exposure and, in severe cases, an insurance fund or automatic deleveraging of traders holding opposite positions. These risks are different from holding an unleveraged crypto asset in a wallet. Liquidity, effective margin, funding, execution fees and each contract's liquidation mechanics matter before evaluating any leveraged position.

Why prediction-market contracts are not perpetual futures

A prediction-market participant buys a share tied to whether a defined event occurs. A share priced at 0.30 is often read as an implied probability near 30%, but it is not a reliable guarantee that the event will happen. Resolution determines the payout. Before then, a trader may try to sell at the market's current price, subject to liquidity and the event's resolution rules.

Prediction trading fees depend on the market category and the share price; some categories charge no platform fees. The 0.0400% Perps taker fee cannot simply be applied to a prediction share. Perpetual futures do not wait for a binary event outcome: they follow a financial reference, and margin, funding and liquidation can affect results before a trader chooses to close.

Polymarket availability by country

Polymarket offers both prediction markets and perpetual futures, but the same features are not necessarily offered in every country. Product access depends on the specific service, the provider's current terms and the relevant location.

Loading a page or completing a signup form does not, by itself, establish that every feature is available. Before trading, check the current product terms and the supported deposit and withdrawal methods.

Other country restrictions and the separate US service

Predictions and Perps do not share a single restriction list. The international prediction service lists Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil and the United States, among others. The Perps order-placement documentation lists the United States, Canada, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and the Ukrainian regions of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk. It also allows for additional restrictions under notices or applicable law. Available features can differ by product and current terms.

Polymarket US is separate from Polymarket International. The company operating the US market is regulated by the CFTC, but that does not make the international platform regulated by the same authority. This also matters when comparing Polymarket with crypto exchanges under MiCA: one entity's authorization does not automatically transfer to a different company or product.

Polymarket vs spot exchanges and other platforms

MapMyExchange profiles Kraken, Bitvavo and Bybit EU largely for spot trading, custody and buy/sell costs. Polymarket has a different purpose: prediction shares settle on events while Perps create derivative price exposure. A perpetual-futures taker fee cannot fairly be inserted into a ranking of European spot trading fees.

For purchasing and withdrawing cryptocurrency, spot fees, custody and funding are relevant. For predictions and derivatives, the key considerations instead include event resolution, liquidity, funding, margin, liquidation and geographic access. Such different products cannot be reduced to a universal winner.

Signing up to Polymarket: predictions, Perps and availability

Polymarket offers prediction markets and perpetual futures with separate product-specific rules. Before signing up, check which services are offered in your country, which entity provides them and which eligibility requirements apply. An invitation link does not establish that every product is available to every visitor.

Some pages may include commercial or affiliate links, which should be identified as such. Their presence does not change the provider's trading fees, automatically give visitors discounts or affect the editorial criteria in this review. Registration, terms of use and any incentives depend on the service and Polymarket's current conditions.
