Counting spread twice

Using a DEX
A 0% trading fee does not make opening and closing a position costless. On Omni you accept OLP buy and sell quotes, and their difference can matter more than the fee line.

The published fee and your execution price are different things.
Variational Omni does not charge maker and taker fees on a public order book. Its counterparty, Omni Liquidity Provider or OLP, responds to requests for quotes. Omni adds no separate trading fee, but the liquidity provider captures the difference between its buying and selling prices. Comparing fee percentages alone therefore cannot tell you which venue delivers the cheaper trade.
Order size, market conditions, available liquidity and OLP risk can change the quote. A small trade does not establish the price available for a much larger one. Compare what you pay for the same exposure and what closing it would return, keeping the asset, notional and observation time consistent. The Variational Omni review covers the wider trading model and tools.
The chart, underlying reference and executable quote serve different purposes.
| Price | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Quoted | OLP execution quote; distinguish indicative and firm quotes. |
| Index | Oracle-derived reference for the underlying asset. |
| Mark | Calculated reference for unrealised PnL, margin and liquidation. |
The displayed quote is indicative. When you submit a buy or sell, OLP generates a firm quote, which can improve or deteriorate as the market changes. A slippage limit constrains the change you are prepared to accept; it does not turn the chart price into an execution promise. Nor does it remove spread already embedded in the offer.
Index provides an underlying reference, while Mark combines information to value the perpetual. If the displayed PnL differs from the amount an immediate close would realise, inspect the quoted exit price. Do not replace that execution price with Mark when calculating realised profit. See market and limit orders for the broader distinction between references and fills, while remembering Omni uses RFQ execution.
This is hypothetical, not a current quote or a fixed Omni spread.
Suppose an asset has a USD 100 reference, a buy quote of 100.10 and a sell quote of 99.90. You buy one unit and immediately sell that unit without any quote changes. Paying 100.10 and receiving 99.90 loses USD 0.20 despite zero explicit trading fees on both executions. That is approximately 0.1998% of the entry outlay, not a 0.20% protocol fee.
The buy-to-sell difference already covers both sides of this round trip. Adding another full spread would double-count it. If funding and emptying the account also require one deposit and one withdrawal, documented flat charges add USD 0.10 each. The illustrative total becomes USD 0.40 before funding and external transfer costs. You do not need to withdraw after every trade.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Entry and exit | 100.10 − 99.90 = USD 0.20 |
| Trading fee | USD 0 per execution |
| Funding transfers | 0.10 + 0.10 = USD 0.20 |
| Assumed total | USD 0.40; excludes funding and external costs |
Perpetual funding remains separate from the execution fee.
Omni perpetual funding can be positive or negative. With positive funding, longs pay shorts; with negative funding, the direction reverses. Check the contract and applicable window: documented calculation windows vary from one to eight hours by market. Do not treat an eight-hour figure as an hourly rate or extrapolate one observation into guaranteed annual returns.
Reconcile entry-to-exit price changes, funding payments or receipts and transfers separately. A receipt may offset some spread, but its direction can change while you hold the position. Traditional-market Swap products use a different financing mechanism; the perpetual formula does not describe every Omni instrument. How funding works explains notional, payment direction and periods.
Moving funds and liquidating a position are separate events.
The policy lists USD 0.10 per deposit and withdrawal. Keep those charges separate from wallet, bridge or sending-exchange costs. Flat charges weigh more heavily on small amounts. Check the asset and route supplied by Omni: holding USDC on another chain does not establish that a transfer will fund the trading account.
On liquidation, a long closes at bid minus 0.5% and a short at ask plus 0.5%, under the documented policy. This is not a 0.5% charge on the entire wallet or a normal voluntary closing fee. Liquidation depends on margin and Mark valuation, while a wide spread can worsen a forced exit. Lower leverage and size change exposure rather than the published fee.
Compare equivalent trade journeys rather than a zero-fee headline.
For visible order books, the Hyperliquid and Lighter reviews provide different alternatives. Extended offers explicit maker/taker pricing, while Ostium adds opening charges and rollover. No model is automatically cheaper because of its label: product and execution determine the outcome. Use the total-cost guide to organise the budget.
Review these points before taking the next step.
Small checks for a more considered decision.

Closing uses a quote, not necessarily the chart value.
The documented 0.5% adjustment applies to liquidation.
Omni adds no separate trading fee but uses RFQ against OLP rather than a maker/taker book. Spread, funding and other costs remain.
No. Quotes depend on size, liquidity, market conditions and OLP risk. An illustrative spread is not a fixed fee.
Omni lists USD 0.10 per withdrawal, separately from external route costs. Check the displayed amount before confirmation.
Mark is used for margin, unrealised PnL and liquidation. A voluntary close accepts an OLP quote, which need not equal Mark.
