Points to consider
- Margin and crypto FX positions incur a 0.04% daily charge.

- Commission-free sales-desk buying does not imply the same price as the spot book.
A Japanese account with several trading modes
GMO Coin may interest yen-based users choosing between straightforward buying and more specialised market tools. Read the product name before the percentage: sales-desk quotes, spot executions and leveraged positions represent different journeys. An unleveraged purchase does not require starting with margin. Experienced order users may care more about the book and APIs. These Japanese conditions do not establish a European funding route or the same account services for a euro-based reader.
Review product terms and risks before trading.
Sales desk and spot: the same asset, different execution
The sales desk lists no trading commission, but its quote remains part of the cost comparison. Spot maker and taker rates apply to order-book executions. Compare equal budgets and net asset quantities, not merely the word free. Quotes can move and limit orders can remain unfilled. The order-book and spread guide explains these pricing models. An asset’s availability in one mode does not automatically transfer that mode’s terms to another.
Two spot bands and maker rebates
BTC, ETH, XRP and DAI appear in the −0.01% maker/0.05% taker band. The second listed band is −0.03%/0.09% for its applicable assets. Negative rates are execution rebates, not deposit interest. On JPY 100,000, those represent maker rebates of JPY 10 or JPY 30, versus taker charges of JPY 50 or JPY 90. Do not buy a different asset merely for its rebate, and remember that a limit order crossing the book can be taker.
| Product or movement | Published terms |
|---|---|
| Sales desk | No trading commission; quoted pricing separate from the book |
| Spot BTC, ETH, XRP and DAI | −0.01% maker / 0.05% taker |
| Second spot band in the schedule | −0.03% maker / 0.09% taker, depending on asset |
| Margin BTC, ETH, BCH, LTC and XRP versus JPY | No trading commission; position charges separate |
| Other margin markets in the table | Maker free / taker 0.03% |
| Margin position | 0.04% daily; loss-cut 0.5%; forced close for unresolved additional margin 0.5% |
| Crypto FX | Trading and loss-cut free; 0.04% daily and applicable forced close 0.5% |
| Instant JPY deposit / JPY withdrawal | No platform instant-deposit fee; ordinary withdrawal free, large withdrawal JPY 400 |
| Crypto sending | No platform sending fee in the guide; incoming transfers can cost at the origin |
Margin: execution, holding and closing are separate
Margin trading in BTC, ETH, BCH, LTC and XRP against yen lists no execution commission; other listed markets use free maker and 0.03% taker. Positions nevertheless carry 0.04% daily, with separate 0.5% loss-cut and unresolved-additional-margin forced-close charges under their applicable conditions. These charges are not necessarily all incurred on every trade. The point is that free entry does not describe the whole position. Duration and potential closing events matter alongside the execution fee.
How a 0.04% daily charge can outweigh entry savings
For scale, consider a hypothetical JPY 100,000 charge basis held over five chargeable days at 0.04% daily. If the basis stays constant, that component totals JPY 200, or JPY 40 per day. This is not a profit forecast or a complete account calculation. It shows why maintenance can exceed a small entry charge. Do not replace the position’s charge basis with only the collateral posted. Exposure, holding time and applicable closing events all belong in a comparison with unleveraged spot.
Crypto FX has its own schedule
Crypto FX lists free trading and loss-cut, while retaining 0.04% daily and the applicable 0.5% forced-close charge for unresolved additional margin. That differs from the margin row carrying a loss-cut charge. Shared percentages do not make both products one generic futures schedule. Foreign-currency FX rows also remain separate. Compare the product, reference currency and closing mechanism rather than selecting whichever row contains the most zeros.
Yen and crypto: deposits and withdrawals differ
The guide lists no platform fee for instant yen deposits or ordinary JPY withdrawals; large withdrawals cost JPY 400, without an unsupported threshold specified here. Crypto sending is listed without a platform charge, but funding from another provider can still cost at that origin. For wallet transfers, verify asset, destination and supported network. The transfer guide explains why buying successfully and withdrawing successfully are separate decisions.
APIs, the web interface and order tracking
GMO Coin documents public and private APIs for spot and margin, plus WebSocket connections. They cover books, prices, history, balances and orders. Key permissions and IP restrictions help delimit access. A practical detail matters for reconciliation: the service page directs API trade history to the membership area and says it is not displayed in the app and Web Trader in the same way. Automation does not establish profitable execution.
GMO Coin alongside other Japanese platforms
Coincheck and bitFlyer provide other yen-based buying and trading references. bitbank is useful when comparing books and negative maker pricing, but its rows are not GMO Coin’s. GMO Coin’s breadth is valuable only if execution, maintenance and fund movements remain separate. Compare spot with spot, and add holding time and closing conditions for leveraged products. Euro-based users can examine Kraken and European reviews instead of treating a negative maker fee as a universal winner.
Who may find it suitable?
GMO Coin combines several ways to trade crypto in Japan. Its sales desk, spot exchange, margin and crypto FX have distinct cost structures: zero execution fees do not necessarily mean a cost-free position.
Our review of GMO Coin
GMO Coin is worth comparing for Japanese yen spot trading and order tools. Its schedule is useful only when each mode is kept separate. For unleveraged buying, the spot book and ordinary yen withdrawals are clear reference points; in margin trading, daily charges can quickly outweigh execution savings.

Is every GMO Coin trade free?
No. Sales desk, spot, margin and crypto FX have different conditions. A zero trading-fee row may coexist with quoted-price costs, daily charges or closing charges.
What does −0.01% maker mean?
An eligible execution receives a rebate at that rate. It is not interest on the account and does not guarantee profit after price changes.
Is the daily charge a spot purchase fee?
No. It relates to the leveraged position and is separate from execution. Consider the position’s amount and the chargeable days.
Do the APIs cover every mode?
The documentation consulted limits API support to spot and margin. A sales-desk or crypto FX feature should not be assumed to use the same API.
