Best exchanges to buy Ethereum

Buying ETH for an app? Start with the network where you need gas. Bybit offers a direct EUR or USDT book depending on the product, LBank puts an existing USDT balance to work, and Kraken Pro lets you compare withdrawals to Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum One.

Best exchanges to buy Ethereum

The first three options address direct entry, spending USDT you already hold, and receiving ETH on a specific network. Coinbase Advanced is a useful reference if you already run a euro account there.

How we build this selection

The endpoint is usable ETH: on the trading balance, in an Ethereum wallet or on the network an application uses.

We open with direct markets on Bybit, a commercial partner. Each book’s pricing and the route to the destination network are compared separately.

Methodology →Transparency →
  • Spot ETH

The book must deliver ETH; a perpetual or a staking token meets a different need.

  • Source of funds

We separate EUR and USDT markets and the cost of acquiring the funding balance.

  • Matching destination

A direct withdrawal to the intended chain can save a second transfer.

  • Spendable ETH

We account for the buy and withdrawal costs separately from gas spent later.

Where will you actually use the ETH?

Two exchanges can sell the same ether and solve different problems. If you simply want to hold spot ETH, what matters is the purchase price and the cost of storing or eventually withdrawing it. If an app on Base is waiting for gas, you need ETH on Base. A withdrawal to Ethereum mainnet can leave you with the right asset in the wrong place. That distinction tells you what to compare before looking at percentages.

ETH/EUR or ETH/USDT: cutting out a conversion

With a euro bank account, Bybit EU, Kraken Pro and Coinbase Advanced give you an ETH order book quoted in euros. You do not need to buy USDT to use those books. Funding still matters: the account needs a euro payment method, and a bank transfer and a card purchase can leave different amounts available. Compare the ETH delivered for the same bank outlay. Applying a limit-order fee to a quick card purchase would give a misleading answer.

If you already hold USDT on LBank, selling it for euros only to buy ETH adds a trade. ETH/USDT converts that balance on the book. International Bybit also has this market, with a crypto-to-crypto rate separate from Bybit EU’s. If you move USDT to another account in search of a better fill, include that first transfer: moving the stablecoin and withdrawing the ETH later are two different payments.

Kraken Pro: when a direct layer 2 withdrawal helps

Kraken lists ETH withdrawals on Ethereum, Arbitrum One and Base, among others. The benefit is not that one is always cheaper. It is the ability to pick the recipient’s network and, when that route is open, avoid withdrawing to mainnet and then using a bridge. A self-custody wallet can show the same 0x address on several chains; an exchange receiving ETH will only credit networks it supports for that deposit.

On a hypothetical €1,000 fill, Kraken Pro’s starting taker fee would be equivalent to €8, against €2.50 on Bybit EU. A €5.50 trading difference decides the purchase only if the rest of the journey is comparable. Check how much ETH each would deliver directly to your chain. If one route requires another transfer, include its actual cost before choosing.

Trading, withdrawal and gas are three different prices

A fill on a centralised spot book does not consume Ethereum gas from your wallet: the exchange credits your account. When you send the ETH out, the platform quotes a withdrawal charge. If you later sign a transaction from your wallet, the network charges gas, which varies with demand and the transaction itself. The wallet’s gas estimate does not tell you what the exchange charged to deliver the ETH.

If you need to use an app, leave some native ETH on the same network for fees. A wrapped token or a staked balance is not automatically a substitute for that spendable balance. If you prefer a simple quote instead of entering orders yourself, Bybit versus Coinbase explains how those products price a purchase differently.

Holding ETH and using it today point to different choices

To hold ETH bought with euros, compare the available fill on Bybit EU and Kraken Pro with your actual Coinbase Advanced tier if you use it. With USDT already on LBank, weigh a direct purchase against the cost of moving the balance. To use an app today, start with withdrawal compatibility and the ETH that will arrive in the wallet. The Ethereum buying guide covers placing the order and sending the funds once you have chosen a platform.

Frequently asked questions

Does an ETH address starting with 0x tell me the network?

No. Ethereum and several layer 2 networks share that format. The withdrawal network must match the one expected by the destination wallet, exchange or app.

Where can I buy ETH with euros and withdraw to Base?

Kraken Pro has an ETH/EUR book and Kraken lists Base among its ETH withdrawal networks. Check that withdrawals are open, then compare the minimum and fee shown for Base on your account.

Does a spot ETH purchase incur the current gas price?

Not on these centralised books. You pay the platform’s execution cost. A withdrawal to a wallet and a later transaction on Ethereum have separate costs that matter only if you intend to make them.
