How to buy Optimism (OP)

Buying OP is not buying ETH or moving funds to every OP Stack network. Follow a specific purchase, then prepare a withdrawal matching the network and asset shown by your wallet.

What to check first

This workflow separates trading the token, receiving it and preparing resources for later transfers. It can be completed without bridging or authorising an application.

1. Choose European OP/USDC or LBank OP/USDT

Do not confuse OP with other similarly prefixed symbols.

The current Bybit EU directory identifies the exact OP/USDC pair; LBank returns op_usdt in its spot API and current ticker. Check the full symbol and Spot screen: OPG, similar names or OP derivatives are not this guide’s market. Exact matching prevents funding the wrong operation.

The Bybit review preserves EU/international distinctions and the LBank review covers the other platform’s tools. Compare workflows in LBank versus Bybit. Contract pricing does not establish the cost of acquiring spot OP.

Before choosing the platform, compare funding and delivery routes in exchanges for buying OP.

2. Prepare the purchase without converting EUR twice

Obtaining the quote asset is part of the spending.

For a European account determine how EUR becomes USDC before entering OP/USDC. Compare that workflow with any account-supported simple purchase by net units and charges. Do not add a conversion cost already included in the quote. On LBank use available spot USDT rather than funds committed to futures.

The stablecoin guide and LBank deposit tutorial cover preparation and networks. Wallet ETH is a separate requirement and does not automatically pay an OP/USDC purchase. Separate trading funds from the later transfer budget.

3. Buy OP with an order you can track

Check filled quantity before requesting a withdrawal.

  • Find OP/USDC or OP/USDT in the spot order book.
  • Inspect the balance funding the purchase.
  • Choose Market buying or set a Limit price.
  • Confirm intended notional and units.
  • Review history, charges and net OP quantity.

A Market purchase reflects the average of actual fills rather than necessarily the chart’s last price. Limits can fill in parts, reserving funds for the remainder. A futures position is not withdrawable OP: locate the spot asset in the relevant balance. Bybit spot trading and LBank spot explain their histories.

4. OP example: notional and fees before withdrawing

Order-book fees and OP Mainnet gas need not use the same currency.

Bybit EU’s initial spot reference is 0.25%, with effective pricing dependent on account tier. On LBank check the pair and maker/taker treatment; its public spot taker range is 0.1–0.2%. A limit is not a discount promise because immediate matching can take liquidity.

Assumption of USDC 1.50 per OP
StepResult
Gross purchase150 USDC / 1.50 = 100 OP
Hypothetical rate0.25% = USDC 0.375
If charged in OP0.25 OP; net 99.75 OP

The example assumes OP-denominated fees at the same price. Use the actual history if charging currency or treatment differs. Funding, withdrawal and gas are excluded, and 1.50 is not a current quote. The cost guide helps count each stage once.

For comparing simple buying with an order book, start from the amount you want to hold and record the spending each route requires to deliver it. One screen may ask for payment value while another asks for OP quantity; these are not comparable units until reconciled with actual execution prices. Check whether fees increase payment or reduce received units. Then inspect withdrawal separately. A modest currency-denominated charge can be a significant part of a small purchase. Do not divide gas cost by token units without identifying the amount and transfer involved. If planning several future OP transfers, estimate them separately rather than charging all potential future actions against the first buy. Keep your purchase record and wallet transaction history so later cost comparisons use consistent boundaries and do not count the same deduction twice.

5. Identify OP Mainnet and its OP token

The governance token and fee currency are separate.

Optimism’s official list identifies chainId 10 OP at 0x4200000000000000000000000000000000000042. This is the OP Mainnet token contract; your receiving address is your personal wallet account. Adding the contract for display neither sends coins nor enables exchange withdrawals.

OP Mainnet gas is paid in ETH. Estimates can include execution, L1 data and other network components rather than a permanent fee taken from an old transfer. Holding OP alone does not cover those charges. The MetaMask guide explains network and balance checks, while buying ETH helps prepare the needed asset.

Before withdrawal select OP Mainnet and check the intended wallet account. With several EVM chains, avoid copying from a tab left on another network. Do not add one token contract indiscriminately everywhere. For a later transfer inspect available ETH and the full estimate first: a small balance need not always suffice, and viewing an estimate does not require approving a swap.

6. Send OP to the correct recipient and keep the hash

First verify the withdrawal route offered by the account.

Choose OP withdrawals and inspect actually enabled networks. Match the receiving wallet’s token and chain. Review full address, minimum, fee and delivered amount. An EVM account may display the same address on Ethereum, OP Mainnet and elsewhere without automatically receiving funds on every chain.

After confirmation record the hash and inspect recipient, contract and status on that network’s explorer. A test amount must satisfy net requirements. For another exchange use its current OP deposit instruction rather than an unchecked old ETH address.

7. OP Stack is not a universal withdrawal network

Shared technology does not merge chain balances.

OP Mainnet is a specific network. Other OP Stack chains do not automatically share its OP balance or exchange withdrawal route. Moving chains can require a compatible bridge or service with its own costs and conditions. Buying ARB compares another L2 and separates token, chain and gas without treating their routes as equivalent.

8. What to check when OP cannot move or is not visible

Missing ETH does not mean the token disappeared.

For received OP with a failed outgoing transfer inspect usable ETH and the full estimate. For an invisible balance first check network, account and contract rather than adding random symbols. A withdrawal still under review may not yet have a hash. Wallet withdrawals covers tracking without duplicate sends or granting third parties account permissions.

An OP balance can coexist with several withdrawal-network options. The display does not establish that all are operational or accepted by a receiving wallet or exchange. Read the particular route and status. When changing routes after a pause, reassess destination and charges rather than reusing unchecked saved details.

Final checklist

Review these points before taking the next step.

  • Exact OP symbol.
  • Pair and balance match.
  • Filled purchase checked.
  • OP Mainnet and contract identified.
  • ETH and exit cost reviewed.

Common mistakes

Small checks for a more considered decision.

Buying a similar symbol

Verify exact OP and the spot market.

Keeping only OP

Later sending requires ETH on the relevant chain.

Choosing any OP Stack chain

The receiving chain must match the withdrawal.

FAQs

Does OP pay transaction fees?

OP Mainnet gas is paid in ETH even when sending OP.

Are all OP Stack chains identical?

No. Select the particular chain and asset supported by the recipient.

Can I buy using EUR?

The verified pairs here use USDC and USDT; assess any simple purchase in its own summary.

Does importing a token recover a withdrawal?

It only changes display. First verify transaction, chain and recipient.
